How to: cut denim shorts

I've had a pair of jeans for such a long time and they got so old, that they cracked right above my left knee. I tried to sew them, but I didn't like the way they looked, so I decided to turn them into shorts. Here's how I did it, step by step:



1. Cut your jeans in a straight line. You should first cut a little bit longer than you actually want them and try them on to see if the length fits your expectations. If not, cut a little bit shorter. This is a good advice to follow because, once it's cut, you can't glue the fabric back together, but you can always cut more.



2. You can rip a few strands with your fingers along the line you've cut and wear the shorts like that or you can keep following the steps for a different look.




3. Cut all the strands that are sticking out along the line.

4. Fold the edges on the inside (you can also do it on the outside, depending on what look you prefer). If you can't make the edges to stay folded, try ironing them. Then, turn your pants on the other side. So far, it should look like this:

5. Sew the edges. If you want the thread to be 'invisible' use a color similar to your jeans'. It would definitely look better with a sewing machine, but if you don't have one (like me!) this will work too.
